You might live in Egypt if...

If you cache supplies of huge bottles of water in your home, office and backpack....

You might live in Egypt.

If everything you own that was once white, now carries a dull orange glow....

You might live in Egypt

If you've ever accidentaly uttered the words, yanni, habibi, yallah, or shokran when talking to non Arabic speakers...

You might live in Egypt

If the sight of rain is so unusual and beautiful that you want to cry from happiness....

You might live in Egypt

If you regularly have your laundry, prescriptions, food, water and groceries delivered to your house...

You might live in Egypt

If you have a boab, maid or driver, and can't imagine how you ever got along without them...

You might live in Egypt

If when you think of Egypt you still think of Mummies, Pharaohs, Pyramids, the Nile, Hieroglyphics and people walking around in white linen....

You probably don't live in Egypt.  :)

Can my fellow expats think of any more?  I'm sure there are hundreds!

  2. Wait a minute... are you trying to tell me that Brendan Fraser isn't waiting behind the Giza pyramid, ready to sweep me off my feet to a lush desert oasis...? Are you sure...? ;)

    1. Yes Anita, I'm sorry to be the one to drop the bomb on you, but the Egypt of your steampunk era doesn't exist anymore! :)

  3. From one ex-pat to another, you'll know you're a true expat and forever changed when you go back to an english speaking country and STILL talk the slang language. To this day, I still say: Hi- which means yes. And Xie Xie Ni - thank you - automatically. Even my hubby does the same now from living with me. Which is strange cause he's bilingual in french and I havne't picked up any of his slang words :)
    Miss you.

  4. Cairo was amazing! Huge, hustle bustle and very dirty... Did the revolution shut down the garbage pickup or something? Our favorite part was cruising the Nile at sunset on a 'falukah!' It was beautiful. How are the elections turning out? you need to post about them :) I said Hi to you as I buzzed around Cairo-hope you heard it!

    1. No, it's always this dirty! I don't even notice it anymore, until I go somewhere clean and everything looks weird! :)
