Quiet

qui·et  [kwahy-it]  adjective, -er, -est,verb
adjective
1. making no noise or sound, especially no disturbing sound:quiet neighbors.
2. free, or comparatively free, from noise: a quiet street.
3. silent: Be quiet!
4. restrained in speech, manner, etc.; saying little: a quiet person.
5. free from disturbance or tumult; tranquil; peaceful: a quiet life.

I really love quiet. I'm a bit of a loner/introvert/thoughtful type person and while noise and bustle can be really exciting at times, it's probably one of the main ways that I get overly stimulated, which is a nice way of saying cranky.

Repetitive noises, like someone tapping a pencil on a table absolutely kill me. I go from a nice person to turbo angry lady in about 6 seconds. I don't know why exactly, just something in my brain says "kill them now so that noise will go away!"

Here's an excerpt from one of my favorite poems that discusses the beauty of quiet perfectly.

Go placidly amid the noise and the haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence.

Desiderata, Max Ehrmann 1927

Tomorrow's letter is R and the word I chose randomly has 7 letters and starts with RE.  Any guesses?

  2. LOL repetitive noises drive me berserk as well, especially chewing/cracking gum. I spend a lot of time in summer tracking down crickets in the garage and putting them outside before I go to bed.

  3. Just this morning, I yelled at my son for repeating the same phrase over and over. It was driving me insane!

I also wrote a little about quiet today. Enjoyed your post!

    1. You expressed my feelings to perfection. I love silence broken only by the sounds of birds singing. people with electronic voice devices, television sets in waiting rooms and piped in music drives me absolutlely nuts. When did people unlearn how to sit quietly and reflect upon their surroundings and entertain themseleves, "quietly".

  4. I'm a very quiet person, as well. If the grocery store is too noisy, I have to come home and de-stress. I just don't like busyness.

Great post! (And, while my brain is blank on guesses for 'R' I'll be back to see what you came up with!)

  5. I'm a quiet person, too. Being a teacher with kids who click pens all day and tap pencils, I like to come to a quiet home (and then the neighbors may get on my nerves with their noise).
